Can The IRS Visit You At Your Home or Office?

Can The IRS Visit You At Your Home or Office?

So, the Internal Revenue Service wants to get to know you a little better - now what? Some people think that if they ignore notices from the IRS, that it will stop the IRS from checking on them. That may be your first instinct but definitely not true. Can the IRS visit you at your home or office? Certainly yes! They have the authority and the right to visit you anywhere at any time.

They also hold the license to cancel your job or business when you are not responding to them. You will not be able to do anything if they take the strict actions. At first, IRS sends you notices so that you respond to them accordingly but if months pass away and you do not reply to them then it can be risky for you as well as result in some very large penalties.

What to do when they arrive?

When the team arrives at your home or office, it can create a really bad impression. Sometimes, it ruins the image of the business in the market and then it does not remain the same anymore. You do not want that to happen which is why it is always better to respond to them on time. They send you the letters by mail rather than email so that there is a hard cover proof.

Despite your busy schedule, take the time to sit with the accountant of your business and check all your business activities. If you don't to do it now then you will have to pay for it later on. It can cost you heavily and sometimes it will cause you penalties which you will not be able to fulfill.

Do not Escape

However, to find the right escape, If you can you hire a tax preparer. The tax preparer handles all your matters with the IRS. They are aware of the rules and regulations to deal the case with IRS. They can respond to IRS better than anyone who is not affiliated with these governmental districts. Either way, don't panic – prepare!

The case gets assigned to one main member of IRS and they take the team to the office. They do not set up the schedule with the person but rather pay a surprise visit. They can sit in your office or anywhere. IRS officer can inquire anyone about your business and there can be multiple questions in your mind.

Surprise Visit

They do not announce their visit because that is the way which is followed by them and their department. They want to visit the business fist and check on the payroll and the taxes. You cannot refuse to them as you may end up getting in more trouble.

You should not be rebellious to them and leave them alone. Let them do the work they want to do in your office. If you are not at the office for some reason then they visit your home and stay there until you come back. Even if you are running away from them, they catch you somewhere.

The best advice for you is to stay calm at all situations. Do not get panicked by seeing the IRS officer at your place. They are not there to scare you but they are just doing their job. They have to determine the situation to analyze what is happening at your end.

Help them get all the information they need without any hesitation. If you do not know anything then reply to them truthfully. Take your time in making the decision which they offer. They do not look out for your interest but rather the government for which they are working.
