IRS Direct Payment System

IRS Direct Payment System

Direct payment offers individual taxpayers an easy way to quickly pay the amount owed on the payment statement or bank bill, or make estimated quarterly payments without having to issue a check, buy a stamp, or look for a mailbox. Payments can be scheduled 30 days in advance.

Direct payment is available 24/7. Any taxpayer who uses the instrument will receive immediate payment confirmation. More information on direct payment is available on IRS.gov.

Direct payment cannot be used to pay federal road use taxes, payroll taxes, and other business taxes. Taxpayers who wish to pay federal taxes electronically must register with the Electronic Tax Payment System (EFTPS) or click on the Pay Your Tax Account icon to view other payment options.

Use this secure service to pay your tax bill or estimated tax payment directly from your checking account or free of charge. You will receive immediate confirmation that the amount has been sent. Follow the simple steps below. Bank account information is usually not retained in IRS systems after payments, so there is no need to be scared of being hacked.

It is claimed that the new direct payments system, which debuted earlier this year, has already processed more than a million tax payments, totaling more than $ 1.7 billion in 2014, according to the IRS.

Also, the IRS Direct Pay only accepts payments on 1040 sets of returns. Other types of payments will probably be added to the application in a future version. You can make a tax payment for a 1040 tax return for the past 20 years (for example, 1999-2019) for most reasons of the payment options. There are two exceptions: (1) estimated tax payments, and (2) requests to extend the filing deadline.

The Internal Revenue Service encourages anyone facing future tax deadlines to consider choosing this free online system to pay taxes owed quickly and easily. For example, if you requested an extension to file your return on October 15 and have determined that you owe taxes, consider using a direct payment.

Direct payment vs. EFTPS

Direct payment differs from EFTPS (federal electronic tax payment system). Although both applications can be used to make tax payments online, IRS Direct Pay does not require a registration process.

How to access direct payment

Direct payment is accessible via the Pay your tax account icon on the IRS.gov icon. Individuals can pay their tax invoices electronically or make estimated quarterly tax payments directly from current or savings accounts, without commission or prior registration. Direct payment allows taxpayers to schedule payments up to 30 days in advance.

How the IRS verifies your identity

The IRS verifies your identity using one of the tax returns made the previous year. It would be best if you confirmed your identity each time you use IRS Direct Pay. In a future release, you may need to verify your identity only once if you sign up for IRS Direct Pay.

Payment processing takes two business days. Payments sent after 8:00 p.m. Eastern time will begin processing the next business day. Save the confirmation number until the payment is processed.

Payments against a tariff agreement

If you're making a payment with an installment payment plan, consider using the Online Payment Agreement app to set up repeat payments.

U.S. Bank Routing Number Required

IRS Direct Pay requires a U.S. bank routing number (ABA). This nine-digit number is usually printed by check or available from your bank. If you have an account with an international bank that has a branch in the United States, in the United States, the bank can provide the route number.
