I have helped people, even, and especially, who are at the top of their fields, from self-proclaimed finance gurus to IT professionals at the top of their various niches.  A theme that I see every year, without fail, is clients that they believe since they made it to the top of their trades, that preparing their own tax returns should be a piece of cake.  

The problem is that although the best in men, though indeed in the majority of women- understand that a true professional knows that they need, and isn’t afraid to ask for help in areas they are unfamiliar with.  The tax code is complex, not only in its sheer volume of thousands of pages, but more so in its dense material of how to apply it.

Many people believe that their tax preparation software will save them.  This can not be further from the truth.  Many accounting information systems (AIS), such as tax preparation software simply does not apply the rules and regulations, nor analyzes the data to get you not only the best outcome, but the right one.  

For example, for people who earn income overseas, using one of these programs allowed one of my clients the foreign earned income exclusion, even though they did not meet the requirements to claim it. This resulted in nearly $100,000 of previously untaxed income to be included, and with it late penalties and interest to accrue once the Internal Revenue Services’ software picked up that they did not meet either the physical presence test or the bona fide resident requirements.  But wait, there’s more.  This prompted the IRS to audit the return, where they found more errors, including the improper inclusion of travel expenses where frequent-flier miles are not allowed to be deducted, another problem with self-prepared tax return software.  There was additional items that were also audited to not be in the taxpayer’s favor but you get the point.  

So unless you want to roll the dice and end up owing thousands in accrued penalties and daily-compounded interest that the IRS will charge (not to mention the states) in addition to professional fees for fixing the problem, at a cost of 10 times the amount it would have cost if you just hired a tax preparer to being with, that is where my services come in to save you the time, cost, and headache.

Nick’s education includes studying Business and Accounting at Regis University, Colorado University, and currently attends the University of Maryland.
