About Mel Wolfson

If you’ve had your taxes prepared by one of the big name tax operations such as H&R Block, Jackson Hewett, Liberty etc., you may have experienced long waits, a different tax preparer from one year to the next and what you many feel are unreasonable fees.

That’s not the way my practice is set up. When you ask me to prepare your return, you deal only with me. I interview the client myself and prepare the entire return. Every client is seen by appointment and I schedule appoints allowing enough time for each, virtually eliminating waiting and reducing the potential that your personal information might be compromised.

My fees are consistent with the time involved and the complexity of your return. Unlike the larger firms, I do not charge by the form or line entry. That means you don’t get charged extra because the computer generated an additional form without. Thus fees are usually less than they would be if you went to the “company storefront”.

I urge clients to contact me at once if they have if they receive any communication from a taxing authority. The initial review of a letter from the IRS is always at no charge. If you have a question, you can feel free to call or email me without worrying that you will get a bill for my time. I will only charge a client if extended discussion or other work is necessary and will inform the client in advance as to the anticipated charges.

A tax preparer needs to be knowledgeable and up to date. Knowledge comes from a combination of training and experience. I believe that I have both and work hard to maintain my expertise. Because I believed that understanding of accounting is helpful. I pursued and completed a course of study leading to an MBA in accounting.

It is also vital to keep current with tax developments and to review existing tax law regularly. The IRS requires that an Enrolled Agent take a average of 24 hours of continuing education per year. The NAEA has an even higher standard, 30 hours. I will typically take at least 40 hours of training per year because I believe it benefits both me and my clients to do so. I also read weekly emailed newsletters and journals distributed by both NATP , NAEA and from other sources to keep abreast of the latest developments.
